Two girls on the same team in the same year in school had the same goal – to set the Freshman Record. Prior to the last race of the season, both were close, but both could not own it after the race. Meredith Collins was pushed (or rather pulled) by Yaneli Martinez most of the race, but with 400 to go she made a solid move and eclipsed the freshman record by 5 seconds. But in her post-race interview, she was adamant that she couldn’t have done it without Yaneli being by her side (and in front of her) most of the race. So Meredith owns the record, but gracefully shares the credit with her fellow “Class of 2016” Panther teammate.
